Common auto electrical jobs in Geelong

The city centre has changed fast, with new apartment buildings and large government offices bringing more people into town. Plenty of them walk to work or commute by train, so cars here do fewer kilometres than in the outer suburbs.

The car that waits while you commute

If you live in the CBD and catch the train from Geelong station to Melbourne, your car might sit in the basement from Monday to Friday. Modern cars draw a small current all the time for alarms, keyless entry and modules, and after a week or so that adds up. Add a cold July morning and the battery can give up. If your building allows it, a smart maintainer on a timer is the easiest fix. Our guide on why a car battery keeps going flat covers the other causes worth ruling out.

Dashcams for street and basement parking

Parallel parking on Malop, Ryrie and Little Malop streets and tight shared basements mean small dings happen. A dashcam with parking mode records while you are away, but it needs to be hardwired rather than plugged into the accessory socket. A good install uses a fuse tap on the right circuit, a solid earth and a low-voltage cut-off so the camera switches off before the battery is too low to start the car. Cables should be tucked behind trim, clear of curtain airbags.

Parking near Eastern Beach and the piers

Cars that park every day along the waterfront, near Cunningham Pier, Steampacket Quay or Eastern Beach, sit right in the bay breeze. Salt settles on the battery terminals, the earth strap and any plug left exposed under the bonnet. Check the terminals each time you top up the washer bottle. If you see white or green powder, clean it off with a brush and a baking soda solution, rinse, dry, tighten the clamps and finish with a protector spray. Our guide on cleaning corroded battery terminals shows each step.

Hybrids and EVs in town

Hybrids and EVs suit short city driving, and you see more of them in the CBD each year. They still have a small 12V battery that powers the computers and locks, and when it goes flat the car will not switch on, even with a full high-voltage battery. The 12V battery can be tested and replaced like any other. The orange high-voltage cables and battery pack are a different matter and must only be worked on by licensed professionals trained on those systems.

Key fobs that struggle underground

A remote that unlocks the car in the street but not in a concrete basement usually has a weak coin cell. Concrete and steel make a weak signal weaker. Swapping the cell takes a few minutes on most fobs. If a new cell does not help, or both keys play up at once, the problem may be a low main battery or the car's receiver instead. Push-button start cars can refuse to start when the fob is weak, so sort it before you are stuck on level B2.

Geelong auto electrical questions

Can a mobile auto electrician get into my apartment car park in central Geelong?

Usually, yes, but check a few things first. Many basements have a height limit that a service van may not clear, and some buildings need visitors booked in with the building manager. Have your car moved somewhere with a little working room if you can, and know where the bonnet release is. If the job needs a hoist or lots of diagnosis, a workshop visit may still be the better option.

My car only gets driven on weekends. How often should I start it?

Starting it for a few minutes does more harm than good, because the engine uses more charge to start than it puts back while idling. A proper drive of 30 minutes or more every week or so is better, such as a run down the Ring Road and back. If that is not practical, a smart battery maintainer is the most reliable option.

Local tip for Geelong

If you rent or own a CBD apartment, ask the building manager whether there is a power point near the car spaces before you buy a battery maintainer. Some buildings allow them, some don't, and some have shared outlets on separate meters. Knowing the rules up front saves an awkward conversation later, and it is worth asking before the first cold snap rather than after a flat battery.
