Live in Drumcondra and need an auto electrician? Geelong's smallest suburb has around 200 homes and some of the city's most valuable waterfront along The Esplanade, so the work here leans towards late-model and prestige cars, low-use second vehicles and the effects of bay air.

Common auto electrical jobs in Drumcondra

Drumcondra covers about 0.3 square kilometres between Melbourne Road and Corio Bay, with just nine streets. Its waterfront homes, heritage mansion Lunan House and quiet streets mean fewer kilometres driven per car than most suburbs, but more modern electronics in each one.

Stop-start and AGM batteries

Many newer cars in Drumcondra have engine stop-start, which needs an AGM or EFB battery rather than a standard one. Fitting the wrong type, or not registering a new battery with the car's computer, can cause charging faults and warning messages. If your stop-start has stopped working, it's often the car protecting a tired battery. Our guide on car battery types explains the differences.

Hybrids and EVs with a flat 12V battery

Hybrids and electric cars still rely on a small 12V battery to wake up their computers and close the main high-voltage relays. If that little battery goes flat, the car looks completely dead even with a full main battery. It's a common problem on cars that are driven only now and then. Never touch the orange high-voltage cables or components: they're for licensed professionals only. The 12V battery is a normal service item.

Living on The Esplanade

Homes along The Esplanade look straight across Corio Bay, and cars parked on the driveway catch the salt breeze every day. Salt finds its way into headlight connectors, the battery terminals and the earth points under the bonnet. Have a look under the bonnet every few months for crusting, and spray exposed terminals with a protective coating. Garaged cars last noticeably longer.

Cameras and sensors on tight driveways

With small blocks and narrow streets, reversing out of a Drumcondra driveway past parked cars and pedestrians heading for the waterfront calls for care. Rear parking sensors and a reversing camera make it easier, especially on older prestige cars that never had them. Sensors must be drilled and placed at the right height to work properly, and the wiring should be sealed against moisture.

Drumcondra auto electrical questions

Do I need a special battery for a car with stop-start?

Yes. Cars with engine stop-start usually need an AGM or EFB battery that can handle frequent deep cycling. Many also need the new battery registered with the car's computer so the charging system knows it's new. A standard battery in a stop-start car often fails within a year or two. Check your owner's manual or the label on the existing battery before buying a replacement.

My hybrid won't start but the main battery is charged. Why?

The most common reason is a flat 12V battery. It powers the car's computers and closes the relays that connect the high-voltage battery, so when it's flat nothing happens. It can often be charged or jump started at the designated terminals shown in the owner's manual. If it keeps going flat, have the 12V battery tested. Leave the high-voltage system to licensed professionals.

Local tip for Drumcondra

If you own a car in Drumcondra that only comes out on weekends, fit a smart battery maintainer in the garage and leave it connected while the car is parked. It's especially worth it for prestige and European cars, which often have higher parked current draw from alarms and electronics. A healthy battery also protects sensitive modules from low-voltage glitches.
