Torquay

The Surf Coast runs from Torquay and Jan Juc down the Great Ocean Road through Anglesea, Aireys Inlet and Lorne, with Bellbrae, Moriac and Winchelsea on the farming land behind it. Surf vans, caravans, boat trailers, holiday cars and farm utes make up most of the auto electrical work here.

Suburbs in Torquay

Torquay is the big centre, a fast-growing town of about 18,500 people where the Surf Coast Highway from Geelong becomes the Great Ocean Road at the Spring Creek bridge. West of it, Jan Juc and Bellbrae mix surf houses with hobby farms. The road then follows the coast through Anglesea and Aireys Inlet to Lorne, with the Otways rising behind. Inland, Moriac and Winchelsea sit on grazing country near the Princes Highway and the Warrnambool rail line. So the work shifts from salt and sand on the coast to towing, hills and farm gear inland.

Common auto electrical jobs in Torquay

Holiday traffic, salt air and a mix of coast and farmland mean the jobs change a lot depending on which end of the shire you're in.

Towing on the Great Ocean Road

Caravans and camper trailers stream down the Great Ocean Road every summer, and the run past Lorne is all bends, climbs and long descents. That puts the brakes on the van to work, and a brake controller that is set too low leaves the car doing all the stopping. Check the controller gain with the van loaded, make sure the brake wire has a good earth, and test every light before you leave home. Our guide on installing an electric brake controller covers the basics.

Salt air from Jan Juc to Lorne

Most of this coast faces straight into the Southern Ocean, and onshore winds carry spray well back from the cliffs. Cars and surf vans parked near the beach pick up a salty film on battery terminals, earth points and exposed plugs. It usually shows up as slow starting, dim lights or a fault that comes and goes on damp mornings. Cleaning and protecting the terminals a couple of times a year heads most of it off. See our guide on cleaning corroded battery terminals.

Wildlife after dark

Kangaroos are part of life on the Surf Coast. Eastern greys graze the Anglesea golf course, and wallabies and roos cross the roads through the Otways at dusk and dawn. Good headlights are the first defence, so keep the lenses clear, replace globes in pairs and have the aim checked. If you add driving lights or a light bar, run them through a relay and a fuse so the factory high-beam wiring isn't overloaded. Our guide on wiring a 12V relay shows how.

Farm utes and machinery inland

Behind the coast, Moriac, Bellbrae and Winchelsea are grazing and hobby farm country. Utes, tractors and trucks there do short, dusty trips and spend long spells parked in sheds. Mice and rats move into sheds and engine bays and chew through insulation, which leads to odd faults that come and go. Larger trucks and machinery often run 24 volt systems with two batteries in series. A look over the wiring before shearing or hay season saves a breakdown in the paddock. See our guide on rodent damage to car wiring.
