Common auto electrical jobs in Anglesea

Anglesea sits between heathland and the sea, about 17 km past Torquay. Since the Alcoa power station and coal mine closed in 2015 it has been more holiday town than industry, and caravans and wildlife now shape most of the work.

Kangaroos on the fairways and roads

Anglesea is known for the eastern grey kangaroos that graze the golf course off Noble Street, and they don't stay on the fairways. At dusk and dawn they cross the Great Ocean Road and the back streets, often in groups. Bright, well-aimed headlights give you the extra second to brake. Dim or yellowed globes should be replaced in pairs, and the lenses cleaned or restored. Our guide on changing a headlight globe shows the steps.

Caravans by the river

In summer, caravans and camper trailers fill the holiday spots along the Anglesea River. A common problem is a van with a 12-pin plug and a car with a 7-pin socket, or the reverse. An adaptor works for a holiday, but a loose fit can drop the brakes or lights on rough roads. If you tow often, it's worth matching the plugs properly. Our guide on 7-pin vs 12-pin trailer plugs explains the wiring on each.

Solar and Anderson plugs for camping

Plenty of Anglesea campers head further west into the Otways where there's no mains power. A portable solar panel or blanket plugged into an Anderson plug keeps the fridge running at camp. The plug needs heavy enough cable, the right polarity and a fuse, or it can overheat. Crimping the pins properly makes a big difference too. Our guide on wiring an Anderson plug covers each step.

Reversing cameras for caravans

Backing a caravan into a tight site or a sloping driveway is easier with a camera on the back of the van. Wired cameras give the most reliable picture, while wireless kits save running a cable through the van and drawbar. Either way, power usually comes from the van's reverse or tail light circuit, so the connections need to be solid and sealed. A monitor on the dash or a mirror screen completes the setup.

Anglesea auto electrical questions

Why won't my caravan battery charge on the drive down from Geelong?

The most common reason is voltage drop. The cable from the car to the van is long, and if it's too thin the battery barely sees any charge. Newer cars with smart alternators make it worse by lowering their output. A DC-DC charger in the van, fed with heavy cable, is the usual fix.

Do I need extra lights for driving around Anglesea at night?

Not always. Good standard headlights, kept clean and correctly aimed, are enough for most town driving. If you regularly drive the back roads at night, driving lights help you spot wildlife earlier. Make sure any extra lights meet Victorian rules and are wired through a relay and fuse.

Local tip for Anglesea

Kangaroos around Anglesea are most active at dawn and dusk, and where you see one there are usually more. Slow down on the edges of town at those times, and dip your lights rather than holding high beam on an animal, which can make it freeze. Check your headlight aim each year, especially after fitting a towbar or carrying heavy loads.
