Common auto electrical jobs in Whittington

Whittington lies about 4 km south-east of the city centre, bounded by Boundary, Townsend and Coppards Roads and the Bellarine Rail Trail. Much of it is laid out in courts and cul-de-sacs around small neighbourhood reserves, with a shopping centre, a community centre and Whittington Primary School close by.

Reversing in courts and cul-de-sacs

Whittington's courts were designed to slow traffic and give kids space to play, which means children, bikes and scooters are often right behind parked cars. A reversing camera shows what's directly behind the bumper, and parking sensors give a warning tone as you get close. Both can be added to most cars. Choose a camera with a wide viewing angle and good low-light performance.

Phone chargers that stop working

When a phone charger plugged into the car suddenly stops working, it's usually a blown fuse rather than a broken socket. Coins and small objects dropped into the socket, or cheap chargers, often cause it. Check the fuse box diagram, replace the fuse with one of the same rating, and keep the socket cover closed. Our guide on how to check and replace a fuse explains the steps.

Fan only works on the highest speed

A heater or air con fan that only works on the top setting is a classic fault, and it's almost always the blower motor resistor. The top speed bypasses the resistor, so it keeps working when the lower speeds don't. Resistors are usually behind the glovebox and easy to reach on many cars. If the fan doesn't work on any speed, check the fuse and relay first.

Yellow headlights on older cars

Plastic headlight lenses go cloudy and yellow with age and sun, and it can halve the light that reaches the road. Restoring the lenses and fitting fresh, quality globes makes a big difference, especially on darker suburban streets. Always replace headlight globes in pairs, so both sides match in colour and brightness. Our guide on changing a headlight globe shows how it's done.

Whittington auto electrical questions

Why does my car fan only work on high?

It's almost always a failed blower motor resistor. The lower speeds run through the resistor to reduce the voltage, while the highest speed bypasses it. When the resistor burns out, only the top speed works. The resistor is usually inexpensive and mounted near the blower motor behind the glovebox. If it fails repeatedly, the blower motor may be drawing too much current.

Can I fit a reversing camera myself?

Many people do. Most kits include a camera, a screen or mirror display and cables. The camera is usually powered from the reversing light circuit, and the video cable runs through the car to the front. The fiddly parts are running cables neatly and sealing the holes. If you're not confident, an auto electrician can install it quickly and tidily.

Local tip for Whittington

In Whittington's courts, make a habit of walking around the back of the car before you reverse out, even with a camera fitted. Cameras have blind spots close to the corners of the bumper, and a quick look takes five seconds. Keep the camera lens clean too, because a dirty lens gives a blurry picture just when you need it.
