Common auto electrical jobs in Lara
Lara's newer estates are full of young families, utes and caravans. With the You Yangs on the doorstep, Avalon Airport next door and Melbourne an easy freeway run away, the work leans towards towing, touring and commuting.
Electric brakes for the family van
Caravans and campers sit in plenty of Lara driveways. Once a trailer's aggregate mass passes 750 kg it needs its own brakes, and most vans use electric brakes run by a controller in the tow vehicle. The controller needs a solid power feed, a good earth and the gain set for the van's weight. Our guide on installing an electric brake controller covers the wiring.

Dual batteries for touring
Touring 4WDs heading off for the weekend need a second battery to run the fridge and camp lights. Many newer utes and wagons have smart alternators that lower their output, so a simple isolator may not charge the auxiliary battery properly. A DC-DC charger fixes that by boosting the voltage to what the second battery needs. Our guide on choosing a DC-DC charger or an isolator explains the difference.

Big kilometres on the freeway
Many Lara residents drive the Princes Freeway to work or catch the train from Lara station. High freeway kilometres wear alternators, cooling fans and sensors faster than suburban driving. A battery warning light at 100 km/h is a sign to leave at the next exit and get the charging system checked, not to push on to Melbourne. Our guide on a battery warning light while driving explains what to do.

Cameras for kerbside parking
Lara's newer estates are full of young families, bikes on footpaths and cars parked along the kerb. Many owners add reversing cameras, parking sensors or dashcams to older cars that came without them. A rear camera on a ute also makes hitching the caravan much easier when nobody is there to guide you back. Hardwiring a dashcam to a fused circuit keeps loose cables off the dash and out of the way.

Cars left while you fly
Avalon Airport is just south-east of Lara, and since March 2026 a bus route has linked Lara station with the terminal. Whether you drive and park or leave the car at home, a week or two away is long enough for a modern car to drain its battery, because its computers draw power even when locked. A battery maintainer, or a quick battery check before you fly, avoids a flat car when you get home. See how to charge a car battery.

Lara auto electrical questions
Do I need a 7-pin or 12-pin plug for my caravan?
It depends on the van. A 7-pin flat plug covers the lights, electric brakes and a basic power feed, and suits most trailers and smaller vans. A 12-pin plug adds circuits for battery charging, reversing lights and other extras, which suits larger caravans. Many Lara tow vehicles end up with both sockets, or an adaptor. Match the plug to your van's wiring before your first trip.
Is it worth checking my trailer lights before every trip?
Yes. Gravel roads and rough tracks loosen connections and fill plugs with grit, and a dead brake light or indicator on a trailer is hard to notice from the driver's seat. Before each trip, have someone stand behind the trailer while you test the indicators, brake lights and tail lights. Cleaning the plug pins with contact cleaner fixes a surprising number of faults.
How do I know if my caravan battery is charging from the car?
Measure the van battery's voltage with the car switched off, then again with the engine running and the van plugged in. The reading should rise noticeably. If it doesn't move, the problem is usually a blown fuse, a poor earth, thin cable, a worn plug pin, or a smart alternator that needs a DC-DC charger to do the job properly.
Local tip for Lara
Plenty of Lara families head off on holidays with a heavy van behind the car. A week before you leave, hitch up in the driveway and check everything: plug pins, lights, brake controller output and the van battery's charge. Finding a fault at home, with parts a few days away, beats finding it at a campground on the first night with a warm fridge.
