Common auto electrical jobs in Breakwater

Breakwater has been an industrial suburb since the days of the wool scours and tanneries, and it's still more workplace than suburb. The work here is heavier than anywhere else in the area.

24V trucks on Breakwater Road

The higher Breakwater Road bridge was built partly so larger trucks could cross the Barwon without detouring through central Geelong, and plenty of them do. Trucks usually run 24V systems with two batteries in series, and faults often come from corroded connections, chafed cables along the chassis or a failing alternator under constant load. Voltage drop testing finds problems a simple battery check misses. Our guide on using a multimeter on a car explains the basics, which apply to 24V too.

Forklifts and yard machinery

Warehouses and yards in Breakwater rely on forklifts, sweepers and other machinery that start and stop all day. Their batteries live in dusty, damp conditions, and terminals corrode faster than on a road car. A build-up of white or green crust on the posts causes hard starting and poor charging. Cleaning and protecting the terminals is a simple maintenance job that extends battery life. Our guide on cleaning corroded battery terminals shows how to do it safely.

Beacons and work lights

Fleet utes, service vans and yard vehicles often need amber beacons, light bars and work lights. These draw more current than the factory switches and wiring were designed for, so they should run through a relay with a fused supply from the battery. That keeps heavy current away from the dash switch and stops switches burning out. Our guide on wiring a 12V relay shows the standard layout.

Horse floats and event trailers

With the Geelong Racecourse and the Geelong Showgrounds both in Breakwater, horse floats, food vans and event trailers are regular visitors, especially around race meetings and the Royal Geelong Show in October. Floats need reliable lights and brakes, and food vans often need a heavy-duty 12V supply from the tow vehicle. An Anderson plug with proper cable and fusing is the usual way to carry that current. Our guide on wiring an Anderson plug explains the job.

Breakwater auto electrical questions

Can I jump start a 24V truck from a 12V car?

Not directly. A single 12V battery doesn't supply enough voltage to start a 24V engine, and connecting it the wrong way can damage electronics on both vehicles. Use a 24V jump starter or a 24V vehicle. If you're unsure how a truck's batteries are linked, get help, as getting it wrong can cause serious damage.

What should I check on a horse float before a race day or show?

Check every light with someone watching: tail, brake, indicators and number plate light. Test the brakes at low speed before heading off, and make sure the breakaway system is charged if the float has one. Look at the plug for bent or corroded pins. Floats often sit between events, so faults can appear without warning.

Local tip for Breakwater

Industrial yards are hard on connectors. Dust, wash-down water and vibration all work their way into plugs and fuse holders. When a vehicle or machine is in for service, have the main connectors cleaned and treated with a dielectric grease, and check the earth straps between the engine, chassis and body. Most odd electrical faults in yard vehicles start at a poor earth.
