Live in Lethbridge and need an auto electrician? This historic bluestone town on the Midland Highway sits between Geelong and Ballarat, so long commutes in both directions, wildlife on the highway, horse floats and cold winter starts are what most of the work is about.

Common auto electrical jobs in Lethbridge

Lethbridge is about 31 km north of Geelong and 59 km from Ballarat on the Midland Highway, with the town centre, school and recreation reserve set back from the highway. Its bluestone quarries supplied buildings across the district, and today the town has an airpark, an indoor equestrian arena and Lethbridge Lake.

Wildlife on the Midland Highway

The Midland Highway between Bannockburn and Meredith passes open grazing land, and kangaroos often cross at dawn and dusk. Driving lights help, but only if they're aimed properly and wired to switch off with low beam so oncoming drivers aren't dazzled. Check your headlight globes too, because one dim side halves what you can see on the edge of the road. Slow down at dawn and dusk.

Floats for the equestrian arena

With an indoor equestrian arena in town, horse floats are a common sight around Lethbridge. Heavier floats need electric brakes and a breakaway system, which has its own small battery on the float. That battery is easily forgotten, and if it's flat it won't apply the brakes in an emergency. Charge it regularly, test the breakaway switch, and check the float's lights before every trip.

Frosty mornings

Lethbridge winters bring cold, frosty mornings, and that's when weak batteries fail. Cold slows the chemical reaction inside a battery while thick oil makes the engine harder to turn. When replacing a battery, choose one with the right cold cranking amps for your vehicle, and a little extra for diesels, which are harder to turn over. Our guide to car battery types explains the ratings.

Two cities, plenty of kilometres

Some Lethbridge residents work in Geelong, others in Ballarat, and either way the car covers a lot of highway kilometres. High-kilometre cars develop sensor and charging faults that show up as warning lights. A basic OBD2 scanner tells you the fault code, so you know whether it's urgent before you book in. Our guide on reading fault codes with an OBD2 scanner shows how.

Lethbridge auto electrical questions

What are cold cranking amps and why do they matter?

Cold cranking amps, or CCA, measure how much current a battery can deliver at minus 18 degrees for 30 seconds while holding a usable voltage. It shows how well a battery will start an engine in cold weather. Your vehicle has a recommended minimum CCA. Going a bit higher is fine and helps on frosty mornings, but a much lower rating may struggle.

How do I test my float's breakaway system?

With the float hitched and the tow vehicle in park, pull the breakaway pin from the switch. The trailer brakes should lock on, and you should feel resistance if you try to move forward slowly. Refit the pin straight afterwards. Check the breakaway battery's charge regularly, because many systems need a charged battery to work, and replace it if it no longer holds a charge.

Local tip for Lethbridge

If you drive the Midland Highway from Lethbridge every day, keep your windscreen and headlight lenses clean, inside and out. A dirty screen scatters oncoming headlights and makes it harder to spot a kangaroo on the road edge at dusk. A quick wipe at the fuel stop each week costs nothing and makes the drive home noticeably easier.
