Common auto electrical jobs in Teesdale

Teesdale lies about 34 km west of Geelong and has grown quickly, from about 1,000 people in 2006 to more than 2,300 in 2021. Turtle Bend park with its bike tracks and trails sits north of the main road, and the town has a primary school, doctors, a pharmacy, a cafe and childcare.

Long commutes and tired alternators

Commuting from Teesdale to Geelong or Melbourne means big kilometres every week, and alternators work hard on those long drives. Dimming headlights, a flickering battery light, a whining noise or a battery that keeps going flat can all point to a failing alternator. Our guide on how to tell if your alternator needs replacing lists the signs and simple tests you can do with a multimeter.

Driving lights for the dark run home

In winter, Teesdale commuters often leave and return in the dark, on roads with no street lights and plenty of kangaroos. A light bar or pair of driving lights helps you see further on high beam. They must be wired through a relay, switched off with low beam and aimed properly. Our guide on how to wire a 12V relay shows the basic circuit.

Floats and vans with electric brakes

Lifestyle blocks around Teesdale often come with horses, and heavier floats and caravans use electric brakes. A brake controller that's set too low lets the trailer push the car, while too high locks the trailer wheels. Set it up with the float or van loaded, on a quiet road, and test it at low speed. Check that the breakaway battery on the trailer is charged, too.

EVs for country commuting

Electric cars suit Teesdale commuters who drive the same long route every day and can charge at home overnight, often from rooftop solar on larger homes. A dedicated wall charger is the best option and must be installed by a licensed electrician, as it's fixed 240V wiring. The car's small 12V battery still needs attention, because if it goes flat the car won't start, even with a full main battery.

Teesdale auto electrical questions

What is a breakaway system on a trailer?

A breakaway system applies the trailer's electric brakes if it becomes disconnected from the tow vehicle. It has a small battery on the trailer and a switch connected to the tow vehicle by a cable. If the trailer breaks away, the cable pulls the switch and the brakes come on. Australian rules require them on heavier trailers, and the battery must be kept charged.

How can I tell if it's my alternator or my battery?

With the engine off, a healthy, charged battery reads about 12.6 volts. With the engine running, you should see roughly 13.8 to 14.7 volts at the battery. If the running voltage is close to the resting voltage, the alternator probably isn't charging. If the running voltage is fine but the car still won't start after sitting, the battery is the more likely problem.

Local tip for Teesdale

If you commute from Teesdale, keep a small emergency kit in the car: a lithium jump starter, a torch, a phone charging cable and a hi-vis vest. A breakdown on a dark country road is much safer and less stressful when you can see, be seen and possibly get yourself going again without waiting for help.
