Live in St Leonards and need an auto electrician? This seaside town at the eastern end of the Bellarine has a median age in the mid-fifties and swells to well over 10,000 people in summer, so low-kilometre cars, caravans, boats and salt air make up most of the work.

Common auto electrical jobs in St Leonards

St Leonards sits about 33 km east of Geelong, facing Port Phillip Bay, with Swan Bay and the Edwards Point Wildlife Reserve to the south. Around 3,500 people live here year round, many of them retirees, and holiday homes, a caravan park and the pier bring crowds every summer.

Low-kilometre cars and tired batteries

Plenty of St Leonards residents drive mostly local trips to the shops, the golf course and the pier. Cars that do few kilometres often get old batteries that don't announce they're failing until the morning the car won't start. If your battery is more than four years old, have it tested each autumn. Our guide on how to replace a car battery explains what's involved.

Caravan batteries on the way home

Grey nomads from St Leonards often head off for weeks at a time, and arriving at camp with a flat caravan battery after a full day's towing is a common complaint. Long cable runs from the car to the van lose voltage, and smart alternators may not charge it at all. A DC-DC charger in the van solves both problems. Our guide on why a caravan battery isn't charging while towing explains why.

Boat trailers and the bay

Fishing on Port Phillip Bay is a big part of St Leonards life, and boat trailers that are backed into the water week after week lose their lights to salt and corrosion. Water trapped inside old-style lamps does most of the damage. Sealed LED lamps, a fresh-water rinse after each launch and a dab of dielectric grease in the plug will keep them working much longer.

Easier reversing

Reversing out of a driveway onto a street full of holiday traffic, or backing a van into a narrow side yard, is easier with help. Rear parking sensors give an audible warning, and a reversing camera shows exactly what's behind you. Both can be added to most older cars. A screen that replaces the rear-view mirror is a tidy option that doesn't clutter the dashboard.

Cars left at the holiday house

Many St Leonards homes are holiday houses, used on weekends and in summer, with a car left in the garage between visits. A car that sits for months will usually have a flat battery when you arrive. A battery isolator switch stops slow drains, and a small solar maintainer on the dash or a smart charger in the garage keeps the battery healthy until your next visit.

St Leonards auto electrical questions

Why does my caravan battery stay flat after a long tow?

The usual reasons are thin cable from the car to the van, which loses voltage over the long run, and smart alternators that drop their output once the car's own battery is charged. The van battery ends up barely charging. Heavier cable helps, but a DC-DC charger fitted in the van is the most reliable fix, and many also take solar input for when you're parked.

How long can I leave my car at a holiday home without the battery going flat?

It depends on the car and the battery's age. Many modern cars will start after two or three weeks, but some drain a battery flat within a month. For longer stays away, disconnect the negative terminal or fit an isolator switch, or leave a smart charger or solar maintainer connected. Note that disconnecting may reset the radio and clock settings.

Can I fit a reversing camera to an older car?

Yes. Most older cars can take an aftermarket reversing camera, either with a separate screen, a replacement rear-view mirror with a built-in display, or a new head unit with a screen. The camera is usually powered from the reversing light circuit, so it turns on automatically in reverse. Wired kits are the most reliable, although wireless versions are quicker to fit.

Local tip for St Leonards

If you're towing out of St Leonards for a long trip, do a test run first. Hitch up the van, drive out along Murradoc Road and back, then check the van battery voltage before and after. If it barely moves after an hour of driving, sort out the charging before you leave rather than finding out at your first campsite.
