Bannockburn and the Golden Plains towns of Teesdale, Inverleigh and Lethbridge sit on farmland west and north of Geelong, with growing numbers of families on larger blocks who drive to Geelong, Ballarat or Melbourne for work. Commuter cars, utes, horse floats, caravans and farm machinery make up most of the auto electrical work.

Suburbs in Bannockburn
Bannockburn, about 23 km north-west of Geelong on the Midland Highway, is the seat of Golden Plains Shire and the biggest town in the area, with around 6,500 people. Lethbridge sits further up the highway towards Ballarat, Teesdale lies to the west on the Shelford–Bannockburn Road, and Inverleigh is on the Hamilton Highway where the Leigh River meets the Barwon. The Geelong–Ballarat railway now carries only freight, so nearly every trip is by car. Larger blocks mean floats, caravans and machinery alongside the family car.

Common auto electrical jobs in Bannockburn
Long drives, country roads and larger properties shape the work across Bannockburn and the Golden Plains towns, with a few differences from town to town.
Commuter cars doing big kilometres
With no passenger trains on the Geelong–Ballarat line, most Golden Plains residents drive to work, often 50 km or more each day. High kilometres wear alternators, batteries and sensors faster, and a warning light on the highway can turn into a long wait for help. Don't ignore a light that comes on. Our guide on what to do when a dashboard warning light comes on explains which ones mean stop now.

Kangaroos on country roads
The Midland and Hamilton Highways and the back roads between Bannockburn, Teesdale, Inverleigh and Lethbridge run through open farmland, and kangaroos are a constant risk at dawn and dusk. Good headlights and well-aimed driving lights help you spot them sooner. Driving lights must work only on high beam, so wire them through a relay with a fuse close to the battery.

Floats, caravans and electric brakes
Larger blocks around these towns mean plenty of horse floats, caravans and farm trailers, and heavier trailers need working electric brakes. The brake controller in the tow vehicle, the brake wiring and the trailer plug all need to be in good shape. Our guide on how to install an electric brake controller covers the set-up, and testing the brakes before every trip is a good habit.

Hot summers inland
Away from the coast, summer days around Bannockburn can climb well into the 30s, and on the worst days above 40 degrees. That's hard on car air conditioning, especially on long highway drives. If the air con goes warm, check the electrical side first: fuses, relays, the compressor clutch and whether the radiator fans run. Our guide to common car air conditioning problems helps narrow it down. Refrigerant work needs a licensed technician.
